Logos for Suicide Tape Transcript (Jonestown)
The text, "Suicide Tape Transcript, used for this blog involved the final conversation between the people and Jim Jones before the mass suicide. Throughout the transcript, Jones is attempting to convince the audience that suiciding is the best course of path to take. The main point that he makes using logos was that they were all going to die regardless. He stated that the government was going to simply shoot down the pilot and everyone on the airplane would die. Therefore, regardless of which path they chose, the outcome of the situation would be the same. The second most important logos that he uses to convince his crowd was that Russia was not going to be taking them in. Many of Jones' followers believed that Russia would take them in, and they could all live peacefully in another country. Jim Jones argues against that option as he says that he will be calling them immediately, but he believes that they do not have the same leverage they once had when it came to Russia. Despite the fact that his claims were largely falsified in order to convince the audience to suicide, many had trusted him due to this ethos. In conclusion, the transcript proved that even with false logos, the speaker can still persuade his audience with a strong enough ethos.

I like the way you explained how Jone's logos related to ethos. To a sane person he does not make much sense, but he was obviously very convincing to those who committed suicide.
ReplyDeleteI agree this text is an excellent example of using logos effectively despite many of the things that he is saying being untrue. I like the fact that you incorporated ethos in the end, because I think in this text the ethos of the speaker is very much tied in with the logical argument he is making.
ReplyDeleteI agree that successfully using rhetorical devices doesn't need to involve any truth as long as it gets the message across and persuades the intended audience.
ReplyDeleteI can't help but be disappointed by those who followed through. To me, his logical reasoning is so ridiculous. However, I think you make the most of a terrible situation in describing the impact him as a person had on his followers.
